Here is part of Griner’s heartbreaking message:
“I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other American Detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home.”
The WNBA star sent the letter to the White House on Monday, noting how the country celebrates the service and sacrifice of those in the military on the Fourth of July.
The Mercury star said that “freedom means something completely different to me this year.” Griner, who was set to play for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian Premier League during the WNBA offseason, was detained after customs service officials found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage.
A photo of Griner was then released on Russian state television. The WNBA star could face up to 10 years in prison for a criminal investigation, charging her with “large-scale transportation of drugs.”
In May, it was reported that the US considered her “wrongfully detained.” Shortly before that, Biden oversaw a prisoner exchange with Russia, as former Marine Trevor Reed, detained since 2019, returned to the States.
With another hearing set for July 7 after the beginning of her trial last week, it would appear that Griner’s return would depend on a similar action by Biden.
Will Griner’s desperate plea be heard? Only time will tell.
