How Magic could help New York make runs at Kyrie Irving, Jalen Brunson

The New York Knicks are hoping to make a splash this offseason after a disappointing 2021-22 campaign. The Knicks have constantly been linked to Dallas Mavericks free agent Jalen Brunson, and now there are Kyrie Irving rumors out there.

If New York wants to create cap space to make a run at signing one of those players outright, there will need to be salary dumped somewhere. Jake Fischer says the Knicks are targeting about $25 million in cap space to try to sign Brunson, who many believe will return to Dallas. Opening up a max slot for Irving would require a good amount more.

Knicks players like Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel are trade options, and perhaps they even look to deal away Evan Fournier after giving him a bag last summer. The Oklahoma City Thunder are often mentioned as a dumping ground for salary, but Fischer highlights the Orlando Magic and their $30 million in cap space as another potential trade partner for New York if there’s an attempt to clear salary. The Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers could be other options as well, but they have their eyes on the restricted free agent market, including Miles Bridges.

As a rebuilding team that also has the No. 1 pick in the draft, the Magic aren’t really in a position to use their cap space in a splashy way. Instead, they could simply use it to take on veteran role players while also getting additional draft capital in the process. Going this route would make a lot of sense for Orlando, so we’ll see if there are any trades between them and the Knicks this offseason.

Meanwhile, New York is also Malcolm Brogdon as a trade possibility at point guard. The Knicks currently have the No. 11 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft and seem to be busy maneuvering to make moves.
