An American League showdown is on tap for Tuesday as the Detroit Tigers face off with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for game two of the series. It is time to take an exclusive look at our MLB odds series, where our Tigers-Red Sox prediction and pick will be revealed.
The Tigers were bested in game one by a score of 5-2, but will seek a quick turnaround as they try to even up the series with a win this evening. Detroit desperately needs it with a record of 26-41, as they will put their faith in RHP Beau Brieske and his 1-5 record with a 3.79 ERA.
After winning another series at home against the Cardinals, it appears that Boston is a team that has what it takes to punch their ticket to the postseason in 2022. The Red Sox have been one of baseball’s winningest teams of late, as they will put their 37-31 record to the test with the 42-year-old veteran Rich Hill on the bump for game two of this series. Hill is 2-4 with a 4.42 ERA in his twelve starts on the season.

Why The Tigers Could Cover the Spread
Currently occupying the fourth-place spot in the AL Central standings, the Tigers took a turn for the worst when they couldn’t snap out of their losing ways more than a week ago. Before Detroit was able to defeat the Texas Rangers by a score of 14-7 back on Saturday, the Tigers managed to lose six straight that ultimately pushed themselves out of contention even further. Now at 26-41 and fresh off a stinging loss to the Red Sox, winning this Tuesday matchup should be of utmost importance if Detroit wants any chance of playing meaningful ball late in the season.
In order to get a hard-fought win and even cover the spread this evening, Detroit has to find a way to generate more offense. In fact, it was the pitching staff that has usually been the best part of the Tigers’ game this season that kept Detroit in reach during yesterday’s matchup. However, the Tigers stranded seven men on base in the loss after recording 10 hits as they were silenced for the majority of the day in defeating fashion.
There’s no question that the Tigers are going to have to hit the ball, as their 192 runs scored on the season is the fewest in the majors. Because of this, there is no room for error for the Tigers’ pitching arms, as they must include a dominant performance to have a shot at sending the Red Sox crowd home on a sour note.
Why The Red Sox Could Cover the Spread
Does anyone remember when the Red Sox started off about as poorly as a team could begin a season only a few short couple months ago? Barely. Since then, Boston has used a lethal combination of hitting and pitching to push them in a prime position of at least a Wild Card spot in the American League. With a division title a long shot at this point in large part due to the Yankees’ historic start in winning 50 of their first 67 games, the Red Sox’ goal now is to hopefully host a Wild Card game at Fenway to increase their chances of making a run when the postseason arrives.
Until then, Boston has to avoid anything catastrophic happening. So far, the Red Sox have done a good job of doing that, as they have sunk the teams that they were expected to beat while even racking up some victories against the cream of the crop of Major League Baseball.
After a spread-covering win at home versus Detroit yesterday, Boston will seek a similar recipe for success as they were able to silence the woeful bats of the Tigers and come up with a string of innings in which they generated some much-needed runs. The game plan is certainly there for the taking, as the expected starter for the Red Sox in Rich Hill is 3-0 all-time against the Tigers with a 4.03 ERA in 18 career appearances.
Another name to be on the lookout for ahead of this Tuesday night clash? Boston infielder Jeter Downs, who is scheduled to make his big league debut after getting called up on Monday. Downs mashed 11 home runs while swiping 11 bases during his time at the Triple-A level.
Final Tigers-Red Sox Prediction & Pick
This contest will go as far as these pitchers will take it. With the veteran Hill able to use his vast expertise of calming the storm with his experience against a pitcher like Brieske who is still very young at 24 years of age, trusting Boston with your money in this one is the wise pick. Not to mention, but Boston is 6-2 on the current homestand and it wouldn’t be surprising if they continued their success at Fenway.
Final Tigers-Red Sox Pick: Red Sox -1.5 (-102)
