Spurs select Jeremy Sochan with No. 9 pick

After declaring for the 2022 NBA Draft in mid-April, Jeremy Sochan is officially going pro. The San Antonio Spurs selected the Baylor Bears freshman No. 9 overall. He was ranked 11th overall in the 2022 class and fourth among the forwards.

Sochan proved his NBA potential in only one year in the NCAA at only 19 years old. He was a big contributor for the Bears off the bench, averaging 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 30 games.

Sochan is one of two Bears in the top 100 2022 NBA Draft Prospect Rankings, His teammate, fellow freshman Kendall Brown, ranks 25th in the class.

Despite the NBA-caliber talent, Baylor had this year, they were eliminated by North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Sochan was a top performer in the postseason matchup. He led the Bears in boards, recording 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists in the loss.

Now, he has a chance to make an immediate impact on the Spurs. And, according to CBS Sports, he has crucial characteristics of a rising NBA athlete. He’s regarded as a “versatile defender” who is “capable of defending every position on the court.” This is largely attributed to Sochan’s “constant energy,” which allows him to always be “in the mix making plays happen.”

San Antonio reels in solid talent to continue building the roster. He should be able to make an immediate impact for the Spurs, as Greg Popovich acquires a talented forward to get the organization back into playoff contention. Keep an eye on Jeremy Sochan, as his potential is through the roof.
