Johnny Cueto takes the hill for the White Sox, while Chase Silseth gets the start for the Angels.

Johnny Cueto has a 3.19 ERA. Injured, he didn’t make a start until May 16 of this season. In his eight starts, he has been consistent at a moderately good level, several notches below the elite form he once displayed with the Cincinnati Reds.

Cueto’s 2022 season can be interpreted in two different ways. On one hand, he has allowed more than three earned runs in only one of his eight starts this year, on May 28 against the Cubs. On the other hand, he has allowed at least three runs in five of his last six starts. He began the year with 12 scoreless innings in two starts. Since then, his ERA has been over four runs.

Cueto’s eight starts can be divided into two subgroups. In his three best starts, he pitched 19 innings and didn’t allow a single run. In his other five starts, he pitched 29 innings and allowed 18 runs. He is still capable of a great performance, but the 5 2/3-inning, three-run performances are more frequent than the gems, at least through six weeks of pitching in 2022. We will see if this game propels him into a month of July in which he raises his floor and performs at a higher level on an every-game basis.

Chase Silseth is making his first start for the Halos since June 3, when he was knocked out of the box early against the Phillies. Silseth allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings. Silseth has made only four starts this season. He has pitched only 16 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs on 17 hits. It’s hard to know what we’re going to see from Silseth, though it is worth pointing out that before the June 3 disaster against the Phillies, Silseth’s first three big-league starts were respectable: five runs allowed in 14 2/3 innings for a 3.07 ERA. The Angels hope he can pitch to a three-run ERA in this game.

Why The White Sox Could Cover the Spread

The White Sox have been so bad over the past six games, going 1-5 and suffering a team-wide power outage, that they can’t really play much worse. Yet, even though they have played terrible baseball in recent days, they didn’t get blown out by the Angels on Monday night. The final was 4-3 in a game the White Sox led 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. The point of saying this is that even though the White Sox, injured and broken, are not playing well, the Angels are not setting a significantly higher standard. The Halos are also undermanned, with Anthony Rendon done for the year and other players being suspended from the brawl on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners. The White Sox are in a weak position, but the Angels are just as weak. The tiebreaker here? The pitching matchup. Johnny Cueto should be picked over Chase Silseth any day of the week.

Why The Angels Could Cover the Spread

After piecing together some wins in recent days with timely pitching and defence, the Angels have to think they are capable of putting together a run. They have Trout. They have Ohtani. If they get the pitching they have received the past several days, they can win bunches of games and string together an 8-2 stretch of 10 games which would push them right back into the wild card hunt. They’re going against a White Sox team which is missing Yoan Moncada and several other important players. They have to like their spot here.

Final White Sox-Angels Prediction & Pick

If you have noticed the Angels the past several games, the under is cashing in a strong majority of the time. Yes, Chase Silseth might get rocked, but if he is solid, this game is very likely to go under. Given how shorthanded the Sox are in their batting order, there’s a decent chance Silseth will pitch well.
