According to a statement provided to TVLine by a Paramount+ representative, “Paramount+ has made the tough choice not to press forward with Season 3 of Why Women Kill.” We would like to express our gratitude to our joint venture partners at CBS Studios and Imagine Television Studios, as well as to the fantastic showrunner and creator Marc Cherry and the outstanding writers, cast, and crew for two unforgettable seasons.
The first Season 3 of Why Women Kill was ordered in December 2021, five months after the conclusion of its second season. Season 3’s cast and elements of the story, however, had not yet been revealed.
Every season of Why Women Kill, which was created by Cherry (Desperate Housewives, Devious Maids), explored how women’s roles have changed but their responses to betrayal have not. Ginnifer Goodwin (Once Upon a Time), Lucy Liu (Elementary), and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place) played jilted women in the 1960s, 1980s, and 2010s, respectively, on the show’s first season.
In contrast, Season 2 featured Lana Parrilla from Once Upon a Time’s Rita Castillo, an exquisite socialite who ran the neighborhood garden club, as played by Allison Tolman from Fargo’s Alma, a simple 1949 housewife.
The two seasons of the anthology series each had completely different casts and plotlines. Stories from the first season were set in 1963, 1984, and 2019, respectively. Throughout those decades, it followed three ladies who shared a Pasadena home and contended with marital infidelity. Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Alexandra Daddario were all part of the season’s cast.
Season 2 only took place in 1949 and followed one woman’s struggle to fit in at any cost. Allison Tolman, Lana Parrilla, B.K. Cannon, Jordane Christie, Matthew Daddario, Veronica Falcón, and Nick Frost were among the actors in the cast. Marc Cherry, the creator of “Desperate Housewives,” also served as the show’s executive producer and showrunner. He is the author of “Why Women Kill.”
Executive producers included Brian Grazer of Imagine, Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis of Acme Productions, Marc Webb, Samie Kim Falvey, Francie Calfo, and David Warren. The show was a joint effort between Imagine Television Studios and CBS Studios. The termination comes even though the show was renewed for a third season in December 2021.
Season 2 will premiere between June and July of 2021 when CBS All Access was still known as Paramount+. “Paramount+ has made the painful choice not to proceed with Season 3 of ‘Why Women Kill,’” a Paramount+ spokeswoman said in a statement to Variety. “We’d like to thank our partners at CBS Studios and Imagine Television Studios, the wonderful creator and showrunner Marc Cherry, and the incredible writers, cast, and crew for two unforgettable seasons.”
